Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Coatings

Micro Surface Corporation, located in the midwest an hour outside of Chicago, IL has been applying Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) also know as Moly Coating for more than 25 years. The MoS2 coatings offered by Micro Surface conform to numerous Military Spec and Aerospace requirements and are flat dark gray in color.

Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Application Process:

  1. Cleaning: Parts are cleaned to remove all oil, grease & other substances. Cast parts are de-gassed.
  2. Pretreatment: Abrasive blast surface with 180-220 grit aluminum oxide Phosphate IAW MIL-DTL-16232, type M, class 3 or type Z, class 3
  3. Material Preperation: MoS2® is rolled at 30 rpm for 30 minutes to ensure the coating has been adequately mixed.
  4. Application: The coating is sprayed onto the item either manually or on one our automated production lines.
  5. Cure / Bake: Depending on the coating used the part is cured in an oven at a temperature from 300°F to 400°F.
  6. Inspection: Parts are inspected to ensure proper application.

Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Coating Properties

Product Number Description Military Spec Coefficient of Friction Corrosion Protection Cure Temp Max Operating Temp Thickness
Sandstrom 9A A low friction molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) dry film lubricant that prevents corrosion, galling, seizing and fretting to extend wear life when operating at temperatures between -350°F and +500°F. 9A is an excellent solution for lubricating parts that will be operated in corrosive environments, are seldom lubricated after manufacturing yet must retain permanent lubrication, and where parts may be frequently re-assembled. SAE AS5272 Type II (Prev. MIL-L-46010D Type II) 0.07 >1500 hours 400°F -320°F - 500°F 0.5 mil
Sandstrom #099 A low friction molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) dry film lubricant that offers similiar performance to 9A where low VOC and no lead are preferred.
  • SAE AS5272 Type III
  • MIL-PRF-46010
0.07 750 hours 400°F -320°F - 500°F 0.5 mil
Sandstrom LC-300 A lead free low friction MoS2 corrosion protection dry film coating that can be used as an alternitive to 9A when materials can not be cured for one hour at 400°F. SAE AS5272 Type I (Formerly MIL-L-46010 Type I) 0.09 2900+ hours 300°F -320°F to 400°F 0.5 mil
Sandstrom 28A A low friction MoS2 coating alternitive to 9A, 099, and LC-300 for when heat curing is not possible.
  • MIL-PRF-46147 Type I Forms 1 & 2
  • MIL-L-23398 Types I & II
0.07 1000 hrs Ambient -320°F to 300°F 0.3 mil
Sandstrom 75C 75C is a conductive solid film lubricant coating containing graphite that offers excellent conductivity (under 60 ohms at 1 mil) while exhibiting low friction properties. none 0.12 Not recommended 400°F -320°F to 400°F 0.3 mil
Sandstrom 103 103 contains molybdenum disulfide and PTFE as well as corrosion inhibiting pigments which prevents galling and wear and provides corrosion protection and exceptional chemical and fluid resistance. none 0.12 750 hours 350°F -320°F to 500°F 0.3 mil
Sandstrom 329 329 is an inorganic heat-curing coating that is intended for use on components that will operate in extreme environments where temperature, radiation and vacuum prevent the use of traditional lubricants and organic solid film lubricants. MIL-PRF-81329 0.12 Not recommended 300°F -320°F to 750°F 1.0 to 1.4 mils
859 An excellent external weapons coating availible in Black, Desert Tan, Urban Assault Gray, and Olive Drab. It contains PTFE to provide better lubrication, fluid resistance and corrosion protection. Proxylube #859 is also Spectrum Reflective. none 0.15 2500 hrs 300°F -320°F to 500°F 0.5 to 1.0 mil
